John Leland Hancock Obituary

John Leland Hancock, “Hambone” or “Johnnie” as his momma would call him. He was born and raised in Davenport, Florida, and recently moved to Northport, Alabama; he passed away at his home, surrounded by family on January 25, 2025.

Though our Daddy loved whiskey, women, horses, and trucks he also cherished friends, family and God. “Hambone”, was known for being rambunctious, stubborn, unwavering, and charismatic; a kin to a mustang, majestic and wild; meant to be viewed from afar, but never domesticated. His laughter was infectious and his character selfless.

Johnie would give his neighbor his last dollar, not think twice about it, and not ask for anything in return; despite his own bills being due. These qualities will forever be etched into the hearts of those that shared “Hambone’s” kindred spirit. Johnie’s granddaughter Ameera will keep his infectious laugh alive, so that we can forever hear it.

In the end Johnie submitted himself before the Lord and opened his heart to his salvation. Make sure you give Ashley, William, Cody, Uncle Terry, Granny and Papa warm hugs for us all and rejoice in Heaven!

He is preceded in death by his father, TL Hancock, his mother, Eva Merle Hancock, his brothers Jimmie Dewayne and Terry Lee Hancock, his son, William Cody, and his niece Ashley Hancock. He is survived by his son, Terry Hancock, his daughters, Jessica and Lindsey Hancock, his grandkids, Lane Toler, Justin Hancock, Ameera Bowie, Jade Hill, Kaiden Hancock, Hailey Hill, Henry and Grace Hancock, 7 great-grandkids, his brothers Gary and Lou Hancock, sister-in-law Teri Hancock and lots of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

James 4:10 Humble yourself in the sight of the lord, and he shall lift you up.
